Two weeks ago

Shelley hesitates, yet again. It has taken her half an hour just to make herself dial, and now she dithers before hastily stabbing at the last digit, and holding the phone up to her ear.

Can she really do this? Will it even work?

She doesn't think it really can. It's... but then. It was the only plan she could come up with. She can't not, even though the amount of lying she will have to do, and to people she likes, is truly astronomical.

"Hello?"

Shelley swallows, hard. "Tim? It's Shelley."

Tim blinks at the phone, then remembers to put it back next to his ear.

"Good lord," he says, slightly acidly. "I thought you were mid-hermit still, Shelley."

And he had. She got like that sometimes, and to be honest, so did he, occasionally. Not that he approves.

"Um," Shelley replies guiltily.

"Well-- sort of. It's a bit tricky. Er. How are you?"

Bother it. She had forgotten how Tim could be.

Which is, really, rather sad.

"Just dandy," he assures her dryly.

"What seems to be the problem, since I feel sure this is no social call?"

And therefore he has no worries about making her feel guilty. It's small enough payment for whatever she's about to ask.

Shelley winces.

Yep. There's the crushing guilt.

"I need help," she says hastily. "We- we lost my friend's birth certificate. And since he doesn't so much really exist officially without it, um..."

Tim facepalms.

"Shelley. What are you doing with a nonexistant man? Those can be most unreliable in the safety department."

"Don't I know it," she mutters sourly.

"Um. But no, it's fine. Really. We- I just want to have some document around. Just in case, you know? Of... stuff."

Please, Tim. Please, please...

An exasperated huff of breath comes from the other end of the line.

"I'll need his full name, parents' names and date of birth, and you to owe me a serious favour. I suppose what hospital doesn't matter, since whatever I put will be false?"

Shelley blinks for a second, hardly daring to believe it.

He's going to help.

"...Thank you! Thank you so much! Okay, um. Birthdate, same as mine, December the thirteenth, 1978."

She had wondered what date to give, but eventually settled on twenty-five as a sensible middling age.

"Parents, Lilen and... er... Brian Morin."

Tim scrabbles briefly for a piece of paper, and jots down the details. He hardly likes it, but to be fair to Shelley, this is hardly the first time he has forged something of... ah... questionable legality.

"Right. And the name?"

"Elan Morin."

She sighs.

"And- thank you Tim. I owe you many favours. Lots, okay? Thank you."

It might -- maybe, just maybe -- be all right.
